“Whether it was mandated by HALACHA or by civil authorities, every Jew in Essaouira took a nap after the Sabbath noon meal, a heavy dafina consisting of potatoes, eggs and meat. . As the son of a rabbi, I was expected to nap on such afternoons without resistance. Only afterward was I allowed to leave the house and do what came most naturally – play soccer and fish, even though both were forbidden. To expedite the process of sleep, I was given books too difficult to read and instructed to study before napping. I tried to obey but always found myself dreaming.”
