“Grown-ups were always discussing who married whom and who would marry whom. There was no minimum age for subjects of such conversations. Parents would promise to try to ‘get’ a certain girl for their son as a wife if he would be a ‘good boy’ and study the Torah. It was done teasingly and good-naturedly. This painting depicts such an event – a father bringing a little girl, a potential bride to his son. She is the object of much talk and well-meaning scrutiny by the females of the family, plus the ever-present neighbors.”
