“The Neilah” (closing prayer of Yom Kippur services) was characterized by a hasty and anxious exodus from the synagogue, with relief for some and responsible resolve for others. There was a happy commotion outside the synagogue. Traditional embraces and handshakes were generously exchanged. For me, the Neilah meant a free ride on father’s shoulders, listening to the drama of the Jonah and the whale story during the ‘ride’ all the way home. The ride was a reward for having fasted half a day and for having stayed in the synagogue as long as I could.”
